5 Awesome Iphone Photo Tips you need to know!

5 awesome iphone photo tips via besotted blog

I took this with my phone the other day, it was a snack for E. which she promptly refused, so I decided to photograph it against my black t-shirt next to the window instead while E. was making me ‘pasta’, I manually adjusted my exposure using Miss Michelle’s tried and true (and such an eye opener) tutorial.

Today though I wanted to go over some palm thumping to the forehead moments I had while doing my research on taking better Iphone photos, some of these things Michelle didn’t even know and that’s always exciting for me, because it means I found some real gems. First up is exposure, gosh, for the newbie exposure is such a scary word, but it needn’t be, basically it’s how much light is let into a photo, it might be easiest to comprehend if you know that a very light photo is usually where you can’t see detail is overexposed and a very dark photo where you can’t see your subject is underexposed.

Exposure with the Iphone camera

That statement may seem oxymoronic because the exposure feature that comes with the Iphone camera is so lackluster compared to other camera apps–or is it?  I just found out a secret way to add even more light or add more depth with the Iphone camera simply by tapping on the image, the same square and sun will appear per usual but if you tap on the sun now a slider will appear where you can adjust the exposure even more by moving up and down. Visuals are always good, here’s one for you.

Accessing your camera from your lock screen

Seriously, I had.no.idea.  I would often sit there fumbling to push in my code and get an error code because my fingers would be going faster than my brain. Another perfect shot missed. If I only knew this one little trick earlier imagine all the shots I wouldn’t have missed!

Take photos in bursts

I never needed to know this feature prior to having a subject that moves faster than lightening, but it is great to know. Just hold down the shutter button and you’ll be able to take continuous photos like you would with your DSLR!

Storage woes?

I don’t think there’s anything more frustrating with the Iphone than getting ready to shoot the perfect moment and you get an error message that your storage is full. Are you kidding me?  Sometimes even doing a mad purge of the photos doesn’t seem to help, but by the time you do so that moment has been long gone. If you have a Prime membership from Amazon (and if you don’t you should), one of the many benefits is free unlimited photo storage! You just download a free app and it automatically backs up your photos behind the scenes.

Grid overlay

In your settings drop down you can turn on a grid overlay feature, this is perfect if you are still getting comfortable with your ‘rule of thirds’. It helps to quickly compose a more professional (and visually appealing) photo. Once you have turned it on you will see a grid overlay appear on your screen when you go to shoot, you can easily turn it off if it’s not your cup of tea (but it is mine).

Do you know of any secret tips that I may have missed? We would love to hear them!

  1. wow, didnt know that one about Prime.. and since we already have it at home, I’ll be taking advantage of that little gold nugget all to myself. Unless it can keep more than one backup seperated from another. Determining factor if I share with my honey or not. Thanks for the tip!

    1. Hi Ryan! I don’t know if you can share, but it’s worth investigating, it’s called Amazon Cloud and one thing I didn’t mention is that since it backs up automatically you can access via your desktop and edit on the desktop if you preferred, which I think is a seriously awesome option!

    1. Lol, thank you Viva, I’ll have to show my husband your comment, right before I put it up he asked if it was a good photo and I was, ‘Uhm, I thought it was until you asked’! So your visit and note was greatly appreciated!

  2. These are great tips. Thank you! I read the tip about adding more light while taking the picture and I tried it out yesterday on my iphone. Worked great. I”ll use it all the time now! Jill
