Gift Guide Seattle local

Sure, Seattle locals (and locals at heart), could stuff their stockings with Starbucks cards and  call it a day, but there are plenty of smaller Seattle businesses that deserve some local holiday love. Did you know Moorea Seal is a Seattle local? She fills her online (and now brick and mortar!) shop with tons of gift-worthy items. You may notice another familiar small business on the list, that’s right – Besotted Brand calls Seattle home too!-michelle.

I am going to interject and add my Seattle 2 cents. if you are unfamiliar with the Emerald City, you may be surprised that it is such a creative hub (I know I was). I have been so grateful to be part of this community in even a minute way and we wanted to do a Seattle guide to celebrate and highlight some of that talent (all credit on the sleuthing I give to Miss Michelle). Cassandra of Coco + Kelly fame has just taken on an enormous undertaking a local holiday pop-up if you live here or are planning on visiting, it may be worth a drop in!-tristan.

P.S. I picked up my nibs + ink and started some lettering for the first time in 12 months, it felt AMAZING. I highly recommend finding even 10 minutes of time to do something you love. If you are curious, to create the ‘cheers’ lettering I used this nib, on this paper, with this ink. You can find some of my fave supplies here. I’ll elaborate more in another post on what my experience was getting back to it (nope, not like riding a bike!)

Besotted Winner!

besotted blog winner

We have a winner, it was near impossible to choose, everyone had such heartfelt answers, as always we wish that everyone could have won. We chose Theresa Meacham!

I think the quality I’ve had most or, at the very least, had since I was a child is a love for stories. I hope that counts as a quality! But ever since I was a little girl, I’ve always desired to know the story behind how a person got to where he or she is. I’m fascinated by the paths of people’s life that makes each of us meaningful in unique ways.

Thank you all for joining in and playing along, I have put up a 50% off the most popular item in the shop–the monogram stamps! They make great gifts (for friends, family and of course yourself!) We will be here all week for you and can’t wait to share more of what we will be up to. One of the things on my to-do list is working on our Foto Rx project, I used three of the (insert top secret blanks here) for the image above (which was initially a pretty poorly shot image, hey it happens!) and I am getting super excited for us to be able to launch them for you to use. Don’t worry if you have no idea of what I am talking about right now, you will soon and I can hardly wait!

P.S. I am probably one of the world’s worse traditional wrappers, it’s so easy to make a gift pretty even with non-paper wrapping skills. I used Besotted Brand twine, glitter bells from the craft store, and what would otherwise be scrap cardstock for the tag (a circle punch and of course a Besotted Brand stamp), super easy!

north pole besotted blog

Every year it seems the holidays come sooner and sooner. We will now forever mark the beginning of the holiday season with my daughter E.’s birthday and go full tilt into our merry & bright from there. It’s super important to me that her birthday doesn’t get lost amongst the holiday stupor as so many of my November birthday friends have lamented to me. To help celebrate E.’s birthday and to get you ready for the yuletide season we would love to do a giveaway to help you make a dent in your gift list or help add to your seasonal craft arsenal, or whatever you want to do with a $100 USD Besotted Brand gift certificate!

As always when we do our bestowals (as we like to call our giveaway’s) we will pose a question and have you answer in the comments, we will choose one winner by Tuesday, November 24, 2014.

I mentioned that E. has what seems to be an innate sense of humor…

What quality do you think you were born with? or What quality have you had since you were a kid?

We can’t wait to hear your answers! If you don’t feel you have a special quality, don’t fret, pin the image or tweet the link to this post and you will be entered. Good luck!

This is a snapshot from Maybelle’s workshop at Fog Linen in Japan last week, I thought you might want to take a peek at a workshop set-up.  Tell me this doesn’t look like good times!  I am super excited to announce  the winner of Maybelle’s Workshop in A Box, it is…(insert drumroll): Kathleen!  Her winning question was-What would you write in a letter to your younger self?   I loved this question too, there were SO many good ones, this one really needed a pause to think about the answer.  I have enclosed Maybelle’s answer below which I thought was so eloquent. It makes me all weepy, it’s very special and great for anyone questioning their own path and how one career can lead into another and just trusting your instincts.  Follow your heart my dear friends, you never know what magical place it will lead you to…

Dear Younger self,

Right now you are just finishing up your last year in school and your internship at the packaging design firm.  You have just received a letter for an job offer as a flight attendant.  You are questioning this career path as it is not what everyone else with a degree in design takes, but trust me, it is a good decision and one that will allow you to have lots of spare time to explore your life as an artist and designer.

Through your travels not only will you have access to all the best cities around the world on a regular basis, but you will gain crucial life and business skills while meeting so many interesting people. You will make friends in many cities around the world. You will meet your husband, who is amazingly supportive of all the things that you do, he will give you a very special gift, calligraphy lessons which will change your life. You will become an expert at time management and  learn how to function with very little sleep this will come in handy later for your life with your twins.

You have no idea at the time, but you decide to send samples of your work to Martha Stewart Weddings, and the thank you note that you wrote to the editor will lead to your career as a calligrapher. You will work on very special projects on a regular basis with this magazine which will lead to other projects with brides and commercial clients. You will take some time off (three years  to be exact) once the twins arrive and when you return back to work you discover that you enjoy sharing your love of calligraphy by teaching workshops and inspiring others.

You will find a nice working mom/ family life balance by teaching small workshops first in San Francisco and then Los Angeles, Portland, New York City, and then Sydney, Melbourne, Tokyo and now Singapore. All the things that you love to do Travel, Design and Calligraphy all go hand in hand now.  Just remember to always be yourself, trust your instincts and have no regrets.
