Minimal Fall Capsule Wardrobe 2015

fall 2015 classic minimal wardrobe

Last fall I got truly inspired by the concept of the capsule wardrobe. In true Tristan fashion, I took to the purging of my wardrobe with such gusto that I was left with just a handful of items to wear. My intention of course was to fill in the gaps of what was missing, but life got in the way and I basically have looked like a hobo since last fall. In fact, my husband was so used to seeing me look like one that when I started to write this post last night he smirked and said, ‘what do you know about fashion?’ not something you want to say to a tired mom with a fork in her hand. I venomously spat out, ‘I did run a bi-coastal fashion PR firm for 15 years, thank you very much’. He nodded, he obviously forgot, because his wife has spent nearly two years looking like a hobo, complete with mysterious stains on her clothes. Now that I am feeling like I should really try an eensy bit harder, I thought I would give it a go again. I put the above board together to see if I could translate this into a more mom friendly version–keep the chic, lose the heels and add the comfort factor (and yes, try to keep it all within a reasonable budget). We’ll see if it can be done (I’ll add this week). I am already finding that the search for the perfect cable knit turtleneck is about as easy as spotting a unicorn. I am thinking loose and comfy on top, more fitted bottoms, some good shoe choices and we’ll be good to go! I am not sure how many pieces this will take, but I am going to try to keep it as minimal as possible, wish me luck!

Have you tried this before? Feel free to let me know where to find that elusive cable knit turtleneck!

  1. A wonderful resource for capsule wardrobe planning and fashion in general is Into Mind. I also like the website Everlane for high quality basics.

    1. I like Everlane’s branding but I haven’t had a chance to try them out yet, thank you for the recommendation. I will absolutely go check out Into Mind:)

  2. Can definitely say that’s the problem or better say reality that every mom faces. My baby’s almost a year old and I’ve already want to give away all my high heels and fancy outfits)))) Haven’t ever heard of a capsule wardrobe but that is a great idea. Thank you for the post – right in time before my fall outfits shopping! Loved the Un-Fancy blog.
    Thank you again!

  3. Love your fall inspiration! I’ve been doing a seasonal capsule wardrobe for about a year now, and if I’ve learned anything it’s that comfort is key. It always looks nice to me to have a pair of heels in the group, but I never actually wear them.

    1. I’ll come take a look at your site! I do have 2 flare jeans in my capsule, not crazy flare or anything (they were in storage and I brought them out, since they are having another moment), the thing is you kind of need height with them, so I decided on a wedge bootie, it’s not too tall and usually wedges are a lot more comfortable than traditional heels, I don’t know if it’ll be a fail, I haven’t tried any heel since my daughter was born, so this will be interesting to see if I can pull it off.

  4. As a mother of five who has bounced in and out of sizes for the last ten years, I feel like I was using the ‘capsule’ wardrobe before it had a nice name. It was usually called ‘this tiny part of my closet where the clothes actually fit’. Also, I have friends who have made fun of my ‘uniform clothes’ for years. A couple of quality pieces from Garnet Hill, a good pair of jeans, a pair or two of Texture pants and a few t-shirts usually paired with danskos and Frey boots (this year Frey flats, too) makes up my wardrobe. This fall I love the cashmere boxy sweaters from GH. They are so cozy over a tank or a skinny long sleeved t-shirt. Can’t wait to see what you’re selecting.

    1. Seriously, you seem so much more organized and put together than me and I only have one little! Your outfits sound great and I really think the ‘uniform’ is the wave of the future. Thank you for you visit!
