After a week of stress dreams on my part, (I’ve been dreaming that my teethe were falling out), and talking in her sleep on Michelle’s part our day has finally arrived!  My daughter woke at 4:30 a.m., my husband got her ready for an early morning stroll (and strong coffee), I put on a huge guilty pleasure on Pandora-The Hall & Oates station, and got down to bid’ness working on the finishing touches on this labor of love and it really has been.  I think I should step back a bit and explain that I started on my lettering journey at a time when there wasn’t much information nor any classes on the internet, nor were there many local classes teaching traditional calligraphy. I started sharing what I was doing and others responded enthusiastically. Then I read that school’s were getting rid of their cursive curriculum and I went on an all out campaign to make sure the art of lettering did not die out, it would be like the end of paper books, it was unthinkable. Cut to today and I do believe I succeeded in my efforts, there are many, many readers that picked up calligraphy and lettering after visiting, many becoming professional lettering artists, there are so many on-line and live classes that you wouldn’t be wont for one, there are books galore, forums, my goodness it’s a movement and I am proud to have played a small part in it. When Michelle and I sat down to develop an easy way for lettering artists to get their lettering ready for the web I don’t think we anticipated the Herculean task ahead of us. Last night after we did our final tweaks and with hearts pumping moved our Letter Rx | Paper to pixel from ‘prototype’ to ‘final files for market’ there was definitely a euphoric sense of accomplishment.

So, what the heck is an action and how can it help you the lettering artist?  An action in Photoshop is basically the ability to automate a task.  What used to take me 28 steps, now takes me one click of said action!

I can quickly + easily bring my scanned lettering or Iphone photos into Photoshop, click and have a file ready for web. You’ll just need to erase any splits, splats or splotches (if you have them) with our non-destructive eraser (dubbed ‘spot removal’). Do you need to know how to use Photoshop? Not really, but having a very basic knowledge of where things are in Photoshop will be an asset.  We tried to keep in mind the entire time we were developing the set that most lettering artists will have little to no Photoshop experience. I have to say I truly think we aced this challenge, but to ensure that we actually did, Michelle and I will be teaching a class Photoshop for Lettering Artists. Yup, we are going to show you how to do it the traditional way–step-by-step which should give you an immense appreciation for the one click capabilities of Lettering Rx, but also empower you to know the steps taken to get your lettering from paper to pixel!

If you have any questions, we are ‘on call’ this week and happy to answer! We truly hope this helps all lettering artists create an easy, effortless and efficient workflow that allows you to get back to doing what you love instead of sitting behind a computer. You can add it to your lettering tool kit here.

A very special thank you to the talented lettering artists that allowed us to use their work for our before and after slide: Lisa|Post Calligraphy, Maybelle Imasa-Stukuls and Jessica|Coco & Mingo.

  1. Hello,
The new photoshop action sounds fantastic and is like to learn more about where I can find it and/or take some classes!
    Best,
    Jessica

    1. Hello Jessica!

You can find the actions here.

The class is scheduled to launch (if all goes well) 5/15, we have a link at the bottom of the post to sign-up to be notified of the launch:)

  2. I purchased Photo Rx at your Etsy Shop. I downloaded it, but I received the following error message: “File could not be downloaded. An unknown internal error occurred. 21:120”. My PhotosShop 7.0 opened when I downloaded the file, but when I go to “Actions”, Foto Rx download is NOT there to be clicked on. I was able to print your MS Word file and downloaded the PDF, but I believe that the FotoRx did not download into PhotoShop. Can you help me figure out what is wrong?? Thank you! Janis

    1. Hello Janis! It will not work in Photoshop 7.0 it’s CS5 and above, I will email you via Etsy this morning:)

    2. I also read that you have Photoshop but don’t know how to use it, no problem (we figured that might be the case with a lot of lettering artists)! We will be launching our class soon– Photoshop for Lettering artist and I think it would be a huge help:)

    1. Hi Mike! We haven’t done testing on it yet, but it is our plan to do it this week, we will post an update here and on Etsy as soon as we know:)

    1. Hello Marilyn, thank you for your note! We did beta testing for Photoshop Elements and unfortunately it’s just not powerful enough of a program to do all the tasks that need to be done. I can give you this little quick advice that I learned, the ‘auto levels’ and the ‘auto color correct’ in Photoshop Elements which are found in the top navigation are very robust and will get you to a nice base very fast:) We have have been recommending the Photoshop CC subscription it’s $9.99/mo. and you also get Lightroom, it’s not for everyone but for those that don’t want to invest in the more spendy Photoshop programs it’s an awesome price and we use it all the time now:)

  3. Love love love these actions, ladies! Thank you so much! It makes editing my lettering so much easier – now I can’t go back to the old way I was editing! :D Also a huge congrats on launching this class – it’s gonna be so useful and fun!! xo
