Photo prompt Foto Rx 52 :: Eye Contact

Photo by Valeria Spring edited with Foto Rx B+W Fine Art actions

Our prompt this week for our Foto Rx 52 is ‘eye contact’. With most photos of individuals we like the capture to feel organic (fly on the wall), but there is something to be said about creating that intimate connection with the subject. This is more challenging than it may seem. Photographer Val Spring (the featured image), has mastered the art of the connection. We hope you give it a try so you can too! We have included inspiration + resources below to help you achieve this. Of course the best way to master a skill is to practice, practice and more practice.

It’s not too late to start your Foto Rx 52, shooting consistently will be the fastest way to becoming a better photographer. Follow us on Instagram for more inspo and edit examples. Shoot this week’s prompt and use #fotorx52 so we can find you and cheer you on (also feel free to borrow our hashtags so other people can find you!).

What makes a good black + white photo conversion?

We are so thrilled by the response we have had to our Fine Art B+W Photoshop actions, these truly will be your go to set for creating B+W conversions that are print worthy. We are excited by the idea of how timeless these editing tools are to create that perfect memory encapsulated. I am about the pickiest person ever when it comes to my conversions and all the ones I have had printed have met my expectations or exceeded them. We did a lot of test printing in-house with a professional Epson printer, but we also sent out to the famed Richard’s Photo lab in Los Angeles, (the one that Jose Villa and Elizabeth Messina use, and just about every other fine art photographer), all of the prints we got back were just beautiful. Some of you may be wondering what types of images convert best to black and white and we created a quick little video that should help. As always if you have any questions, just leave them in the comments or send us an email, if you have any questions on any of our editing sets we are happy to answer!

Photo prompt :: document your journey

egle-bike-classic-bw-1080

Our prompt this week for our weekly photo prompt for Foto Rx 52 is to document a journey. It could be your morning commute to the office, your walk with your dog, or your holiday of course–shoot whatever catches your attention on your ‘journey’. Look for light, try different angles and try to have the photo make the viewer want to know more. We think this image by @egle.juzu is a perfect example of her journey captured.

We are beyond thrilled to launch our Fine Art B+W Photoshop action set. This has been a project a long time in the making and we are so excited to be able to share it with you!  We chose to release the Fine Art B+W set with Photoshop actions before Lightroom presets, because we had in mind the end user that would be creating art worthy prints and not editing huge amounts of images (which you can do with a batch edit).  This is a powerful editing tool for those that want access to a ‘digital darkroom’.

In our research we found that many artists we admired created their end black and whites in the dark room (we are looking at you Ansel Adams). Sometimes you can have an end image in mind that just needs the right base image combined with the right tools to create magic. The set includes everything from your classic B+W conversion to the more graphic and modern high-key. We have loaded the set with refinement tools so you can truly bring your unique creative vision to life. This set is unlike anything else we have found on the market and we hope to see some incredibly beautiful B+W conversions from it. As with all our editing offerings we include a multi-page PDF and quick videos to help you along the way. We of course are always here to answer any questions you may have.

Foto 52 :: Portraits

Lola-portraits

This week for our 52 week photo project prompt is ‘portrait’. You can choose a human (yourself included) or animal, any style you like. We know portraits can be challenging, they don’t need to be traditional, think outside the box (like the portrait shown). What we want  you to try to capture is the essence of your subject, a glimpse of who they are. Have fun!
