Free Salt Prints via VIMPT

Vimpt salt prints via besotted blog

I am always in awe of the wonders I come across via these interwebs.  I accidentally stumbled across Craig Austin’s, VIMPT feed on Instagram. Austin’s feed is filled with incredible images, none of them his, well, I take that back, all of them his, let me back up…Austin in a master printer, he decided to donate his time and skills to the Instagram community by offering free salt prints to the community. You submit your interest via his hashtag #vimpt and then he takes a peek, finds the images that he feels will translate best and gets to work. The results? Stunning!  I love the entire process of making a photograph, but editing and hands on printing are really my jam. I wish there were more hours in the day, days in the year, etc. because I want to try this so badly. Until then, I need to get to start tagging….

P.S. We did a little ‘house’ cleaning on the blog, so if you are having trouble finding anything, blame me, I totally messed up, but don’t fret, everything is here, it just may be in another spot;)

Besotted with Herb Ritts L.A. Style

herb ritts l.a. style via besotted blog

Herb Ritts is one of my very favorite photographers, simple and glamorous, iconic and utterly unforgettable. I picked up Herb Ritts L.A. Style the other day and it did not disappoint, curated by Paul Martineau associate curator for photography at the Getty museum (a favorite museum if you ever get a chance to visit), it is filled with Mr. Ritts most seminal images.

Michelle and I have been studying masters of photography for a while, mainly images in black and white, research to inspire us while we are developing our black and white Photoshop actions and presets. It has been a labor of love for sure going through photo history and identifying the tones and characteristics of a monochrome image, the qualities that make it most striking and how the absence of color was used to greatest effect. It is a lot more complicated than it seems, for me a natural born tinkerer it’s my happy place. I love having someone to pore over these collections with, someone that can add to the conversation (and is equally as giddy). Unlike most editing tools we have created, where we can almost magically transform your so-so image into something great, a black and white takes a little more forethought, sure you can get good results but with a little planning you’d be able to get outstanding ones.  We are all about creating something outstanding.

What about you?  Any favorite photographers that shot mainly in b+w that you’d like us to research?

vintage foto fix cricket before and after

All weekend long I am doing edits on my Instagram feed of vintage photos. This is proof positive that the Vintage Foto Fix Photoshop action set is an easy peasy undertaking, because I am doing them with the ‘assistance’ of a 3 year old, she is ‘curating’, sometimes clicking, always on my lap. Of course toddlers are not known for their infinite wells of patience so you know this has to be quick. Read More
