I love unexpected inspiration, you? I had planned to write an Inspiration Rx post and I knew I wanted to do a giveaway of Victoria Smith’s new book See San Francisco, but today the posts collided to create this here post. I also have a secret source for you! I got Victoria’s book this morning, a travel guide cum visual love letter to my favorite American city–San Francisco. Flipping through page after page of eye candy and ruing that I had ‘nothing to shoot’, I decided to just get out and walk, no preconceived plan, just put E. on me and walk the neighborhood (my daughter is big on adventure). Before I left I changed my lens, something I rarely do, I just figured I would change it up and see what happened. The beautiful buttery bokeh image above was one of many images I found on my walk today, all within a one block radius of where we live. Victoria’s book made me take another look at my own environment and try to come at it with a new perspective. Read More

INSPIRATION RX | TIM WALKER
Story. Fanciful. Dreamland.
With our largely neutral palettes and clean styling around here, you may not guess that we are both huge Tim Walker fans. Oh the tales he tells within a single still image! There is so much to learn from this consummate daydreamer who brings his own brand of fantastical fairy tales to life. Even his simpler, stripped-down portraits convey a rich underlying story, and showcase the nimble imagination behind the imagery.
If you are as enamored with Tim Walker as we are, you may be interested in having his book Story Teller on your coffee table for inspiration emergencies. There is also an excellent video interview by the fashion brand Mulberry, conducted by Penny Martin (editor-in-chief of a little publication called The Gentlewoman) that is broken down into an easily digestible Parts i, ii, and iii.
You may notice Tim Walker often has his models staged on incredible, other-worldly sets. He frequently collaborates with the brilliant set designer Rhea Thierstein. Check out Freunde von Freunden for an interview and tour of her studio!

Inspiration Rx | Vivian Maier
We have written about Ms. Maier before when her archives were first discovered (such an amazing story). Her observant eye that was able to capture such perfect moment’s in time; observation’s that may have been overlooked by someone not as in tune with her surroundings. This is a great lesson if you feel you just have nothing to shoot, write, draw…if you go through her prolific portfolio’s you will see that she must have done a lot of just walking about, observing and shooting. As that iconic PNW athletic company would say, ”Just do it’!
I was contacted last night by a company called Artsy that asked that we include additional information that they had collected on Ms. Maier’s behalf. Since she is such an enigma I was happy to oblige. I was really immediately hooked by their mission:
We strive to make all of the world’s art accessible to anyone. Our Vivian Maier page, for example, includes her bio, 110+ images of her works, exclusive articles about Vivian Maier, as well as her exhibitions.
I knew this was going to be an excellent resource for anyone that needed a little shot of Inspiration|Rx! Words that come to mind for Ms. Maier’s work (and if you are new to her, we hope you are equally as charmed by the story + discovery) are:
Mysterious. Observant. Quotidian.
Perhaps, these images and words will be a nice start for shooting, writing, drawing, lettering, cooking…? Whatever medium you choose to be creative this week. If you do find you are moved we would love to peek, use the hashtag #inspirationrx on your fave social media site or link in the comments below so we can visit and ooh and aah over your creativity!
P.S. If you want to delve more into Vivian Maier’s world there is a documentary and book. Michelle and I saw an exhibit here in Seattle and Ms. Maier’s work is absolutely fascinating, like a fly on the wall coupled with time travel.

Inspiration Rx | Philippe Halsman
Spontaneous, Exuberant, Energetic
We dearly miss our Inspiration Rx series and many of you have mentioned that you miss it too! So we have been wracking our full-to-bursting brains to figure out a way to give you a healthy dose of Inspiration Rx, but in a more efficient, highly concentrated way. Our solution? Every week we’ll bring you an image (we will be featuring both new artists as well as icons you should know) with 3 words or statements that come to mind for us when looking at this image. Use one of those words as a prompt, or the image itself to springboard your next creative exercise!
We chose Philippe Halsman because his images personified our current frame of mind + moods, we are currently in full on ‘hooray and jumping for joy mode’ here. His images were also very innovative for the period he shot them in where there was much emphasis on serious glamour he photographed the most glamorous in these joyful jumps. His portraiture is equally as creative and charming, You can visit his galleries here.
What do you think? Are you motivated by one of these prompts? How about the images?
As always, we want to see your work! Leave a link to your project in the comments, or use the hashtag #inspirationrx on Instagram!
P.S. Here’s an interview with Mr. Halsman by Leonard Nimoy. I love how he starts by saying that Philippe Halsman has recorded history in a “brilliant and beautiful way”, we concur!
INSPIRATION Rx | LISTEN
“I tried to discover, in the rumor of forests and waves, words that other men could not hear, and I pricked up my ears to listen to the revelation of their harmony.”
Inspiration Rx : This series is a remedy for blank walls, sparse reading lists and creative ruts.
This week’s prompt: Listen
Sometimes we are so inundated with noise that it’s easier to tune everything out rather than make the effort to listen. For this week, we’d like you to listen to someone’s story or concerns, to the environmental sounds around you, or even to your own inner voice and create something inspired by what you hear.
Try closing your eyes for 30 seconds or so and really listen to the sounds around you. I just stopped typing and listened for a couple of seconds, and was surprised at how many sounds I had been tuning out: an airplane overhead, the music on my computer, the furnace kicking on and the hurried footsteps of a neighborhood kid running down the sidewalk. Any of these sounds could provide a jumping off point for my project this week (the furnace is on – it’s getting colder outside .. maybe I should make a photo of someone bundled in a scarf, for example).
Our attention is precious and listening to someone can be such a generous act. You could take the time to really listen to someone this week, let them know they are important & hear what they have to say. This could include yourself! Is there a little voice nudging you to pursue an interest or passion? Maybe it’s time to listen.
There were some wonderful interpretations of the after prompt this week. Melanie saw beauty in foil candy wrappers and Ursula captured her family at the end of the perfect fall day.
Feeling Inspired?
Listen to that little birdie on your shoulder & start creating! You have until next Tuesday to share your creations.

If you are dreaming of having our featured photo in your home, Steve Mackay (who is very nice by the way) tells me that he does sell prints. Simply contact him via his website & he will be happy to give you all of the details.
This prompt made me think of a book I read recently: The Story of Beautiful Girl by Rachel Simon. It’s both a love story & a heartbreaking peek into mental institutions of the past. The main character rarely speaks but obviously does a lot of listening. It’s the sort of book that stays with you for a bit after you put it down. Have you read it?
P.S. Miss B. is due soon and the holidays are upon us, so we will be taking a brief hiatus on new Inspiration Rx columns until the new year. We will still be allowing people to join in on former prompts and make sure the group is still open to new and current members to work on past prompts. We can’t wait to see your inspiration for Listen and hoping that if you haven’t already, join in and get inspired!
