Finding your photo editing style

(if you are on a desktop, rollover images to see the before’s!)

Michelle and I know how hard it is to build a solid look for your brand when there are so many options, but it is a necessity to help your brand stand out in a sea of other brands (maybe brands not too unlike your own). To be relevant in this new economy you have to wear so many hats, be a writer, stylist, photographer, photo editor, social media manager, accountant and basically Houdini. Taxing. Your visual identity is who you are to the world at large (whether it is true to you or not). With Foto Rx | Cure for the Common Capture, our hope is to do the heavy lifting, we know that not everyone is a photographer or editor, but we also know how very important it is to have a solid visual presence. We are super excited to soon release our first set of photo editing enhancements/filters, up until this point we have only worked on improving your images or assisting with lettering clean up.  The new set will be one click enhancements that are fully adjustable (and non-destructive) and will help you build a cohesive and distinctive look to your photographs. This way you can get in and out of Photoshop and from behind your computer and do all the things you love to do more (like enjoy your loved ones or eat!).Read More

Rollover before and after images in WordPress!

You should know that silence around here usually means we have gotten deep into a project, so I am coming up for air to share what I just learned!  I learned how to do an easy rollover before and after in WordPress! This is exciting, something I wanted to learn for ages! The image shown is our after, if you roll your cursor over you’ll see the ‘before’ and the dramatic transformation, why this is a game changer folks! I think I might go ‘before’ and ‘after’ crazy! We are working on a couple sets to enhance your photos rather just help fix them. It has been really fun to explore a more creative side of editing. The best part? Anyone can do it! I had my daughter press the play button to edit this photo, yes a 3 year old edited this image! The new set we are working on will create a modern muted tone to images, it can be as subtle or intense as you like. My daughter went for full strength but toddlers are like that. Anyway, if you want to learn how to do this easy rollover trick, please do visit Emilia for the code (link below), it’s super simple, pinky promise!

We are trying to figure out what it is YOU want from us, since we are deep into the lab right now developing new offerings to make your photo editing life a little easier and with the new ‘filters’ to help you create a branded look for your images. Do you even want filters? Do you want to learn the beauty of Lightroom (it’s SO much fun), Classes? What would you like to learn? We have a new class that we have almost wrapped up, which should be a quick and easy learn, plus give you another skill to add to your growing creative skill arsenal! We love hearing from you and we value your input, so we are open to hearing your thoughts!

Attracting the clients/life you want

The post title may seem a bit ambitious, but we always like to share what we have learned, especially since we seem to learn everything the hard way. We take the long road, no stops or short cuts and sometimes the reality of how we could have done things strikes many moons down the road. We will offer the abbreviated version so you can bypass all the detritus and actually have success a heck of a lot sooner (things we wished others would have shared with us!)Read More

Digital Cyanotypes

A few months ago Michelle and I decided to focus.  We are way behind on sharing exactly what that focus is, because we have been too busy focusing to come up for air on that, but we shall! I did want to share with you a little update on the ‘fruits’ of our focus. This month, with a solid (uhm, solid for us) focus we have created two new Photoshop action sets for Foto Rx, another two creative sets to launch in November, we finished recording our second Skillshare class, we are almost ready to launch our new site (!) and we have a pretty thorough plan laid out for at least the next quarter with products and classes, and we have worked tirelessly on a top secret project that is launching early next year. All that crammed into only two day a week work weeks. We are both tired and pretty proud, previously just a small portion of that list would have taken us at least an entire summer to complete, so if you ask me if this focusing is paying off I am going to give it a thumbs up. We have been a million times more productive and in turn we have seen even in this small amount of time a shift in what our potential revenue could be (a heck of a lot more than it was with all of scattered projects). It’s all very exciting and we want to share more soon for those still struggling with this! And now a little drum roll for our new release today…Read More

One click watercolor effect in Photoshop (a preview!)

foto-rx-one-click-watercolor-class-previewWhen it gets quiet in these parts you know that Michelle and I have been up to something, usually something big and usually something good!  We wanted to share a peek into our new Skillshare class!  We won’t be launching it until November but we are super excited to let you know when the time comes the new (and HUGE) lettering resource we have teamed up with to do a giveaway of the class with.

This is actually going to be a first in a series of classes we have dubbed ‘Hidden Photoshop’, we have found some buried Photoshop treasures that allow you to do things like this super amazing one click watercolor effect! There are many little gems in Photoshop that most people aren’t aware of and we can’t wait to share them with you. We love demystifying PS, because it really isn’t as daunting as it seems and armed with a little knowledge you can create a whole myriad of wonderful things! The class will come with the exact palette and effect shown above for you to to download (free) and play with when you take the class. We have been experimenting with this technique for months now and are thrilled to finally be able to get the class + tools  to you soon!

foto-rx-watercolor-effect-eyelashes

Is this crazy fun or what?  These eyelashes were drawn with a pen and the watercolor effect was added, in my humble opinion I think it looks pretty darn realistic! For those that may be shouting at the screen to just pick up a watercolor brush, yes, you can (and we hope you do at some point in your life, because it’s a ton of fun) but this is just a fun technique and skill to add to your design arsenal–it’s quick, it’s non-destructive and there’s no clean-up! We have played with this on fonts, lettering, logo mock-ups, backgrounds, you name it all to great results. We will send out a note when the class is available, along with a discount for new sign-ups to Skillshare (at the time of this writing it’s .99 for 3 months and you cancel before the 3 months is up if you so choose), that would give you plenty of time to take all of our classes and then some!  I am sure we will be back this week with some other random goodie for you!
