INSPIRATION RX | MUSE

Inspiration Rx Elle Moss Muse Besotted

“She wrote to him fairly regularly, from a paradise of triple exclamation points and inaccurate observations.”

Inspiration Rx : This series is a remedy for blank walls, sparse reading lists, & creative ruts.

This week’s prompt: MUSE

For Wes Anderson it’s Bill Murray, for Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe it was each other, for Theron Humphrey it’s Maddie the coonhound, & now it’s your turn. This week we’d like you to create something with your muse in mind. Think of a person, pet, place, type of food, even a specific time period, anything that draws you in like nothing/no one else. For me (& many other photographers), it’s light. Something as simple as shadows cast on a curtain, or morning light bouncing off the water in my shower can motivate me to pick up the camera. Muses are the ultimate collaborators, they are there to help spark your imagination & take it to places you may not have explored on your own.

If your muse is illusive, just look to Lulu in Elle Moss’ photo above, I’m sure she will be happy to help! Let’s say the Salinger passage is referring to her as well. Try to envision what her life is like, look for details both large & small. What was her most recent meal? Where does she live? What is her relationship with the photographer? Does she always wear black? You could even create a Pinterest board for her if you’d like to get better acquainted. Oh, I’d love to see those, please let us know if you put one together!

A few brave souls helped us break the ice last week! Lisa woke up early & found some treasures waiting for her in the fog. Melanie is trying her hand at a new medium & has some excellent reminders for those of us who have ever said “I can’t”. Ursula captured her daughter in a beautiful moment, & Moira’s heartfelt piece was both sweet & insightful.

Feeling Inspired?

It’s not too late to join in, start any time. Just be sure to share your creation before next Tuesday!

Piqued your interest?

The relationship between artists & their muses provides rich material for novels, biographies, & movies. Did you know that Claude Monet’s wife continually inspired his work? Since reading about their life together & the effect it had on his work in Claude & Camille, I have to admit, I look at his work differently. Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald is a fictional portrait of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s extraordinary wife & muse. It highlights their boisterous social life which directly influenced The Great Gatsby. If you are interested in Andy Warhol or just the 60’s art scene in general, you can take a peek into the life of muse Edie Sedgwick in Factory Girl.

Let’s not forget the fuzzy muses! For photographers, of course there’s William Wegman & his Weimaraners. Shaggy Muses explores the faithful companions of famous female writers including Virginia Woolf & Emily Dickinson.  I can never get enough of Maddie the coonhound, if you agree, follow @thiswildidea on Instagram & get ready to hit the like button repeatedly!

HAND-LETTERED STAMP GIVEAWAY!

hand-lettered stamp besotted brand

Monday’s, I have to say that unlike my former corporate life I truly look forward to them now.  I also love being able to share these Bestowals with you, truth be told, I did have another one scheduled and I still hope to add it here later today.  Michelle and I have been working behind the scenes on a little pet project and I was hoping to have it ready to launch this a.m., but I am so behind.  Let me tell you growing a human takes marathon worthy endurance; to all those that have gone before me you made it look way too easy. Sheesh, if waif Kate Moss could do it, it should be a breeze for me, right?  I get winded standing up, Kate just looks like a waif she obviously is part Hercules. For those of you that carried multiples?!  You should have been awarded the equivalent of a purple heart in the delivery room, I will never look at Octomom the same way. She may be coo coo but what she was able to achieve? Not even going to wrap my weary brain around it.

So back to the bestowal!  I brought back the ‘handmade’ stamp as I have had so many requests for it that it seemed like the right thing to do.  I have been getting requests for hand-lettered sentiments which I have been doing for select clients and thought I should start adding to the shop, they will be limited edition as my lettering evolves I want to update them accordingly. I haven’t added them to the shop yet I need to photograph the samples, but I can tell you that they turned out so good, they stamp beautifully!  I am a serious stickler about my stamps leaving a beautiful impression and it can be very tricky when you are working with such thin lines. I am giving away two of the new stamps of your choice, just answer the following question by Sunday, September 8, 2013:

What is you favorite day of the week and why?

I will announce the winner the following Monday! And the winner of  the Cantoni font giveaway is Suzanna, congrats!

P.S. I also added a new monogram style, I created this one for one of the ladies at Grey Likes Nesting and I loved the way it turned out. I love me some monograms so for this week only use coupon code MONO50 to get 50% off your own custom monogram until September 9th.

P.P.S. There’s still room to join in the lettering fun this Saturday in L.A. and get to meet the very round me, I will be in the a.m. class (the afternoon class has sold out!)

INSPIRATION RX | EMERGING

inspiration rx emerging i

A death and birth, on the same day, at the same time. The question ‘why’ was functionally obsolete–there was no reason for it, yet it was obviously and abstrusely there serving no real purpose. Even if there was an answer, could it ever be a good enough one?  K. stared into the quiet abyss which was once her home. The familiar now unrecognizable felt more like a strange corner of her memory–foggy and soft, shifting in and out of the gray crevices of her brain folds, not quite emerging to the surface. She had become a stranger in her own world and wasn’t sure if she would ever be known to anyone again.

LIPSTICK QUEEN

lipstick queen chinatown chase besotted blogI like to think of myself as having a little substance, perhaps even some smarts (although my common sense is to be reckoned with), but when it comes to cosmetics I can talk shop all day long. I become a 16 year girl twirling the proverbial phone cord around my index finger (remember land lines?) and all the substance that I thought I was made of is reduced to an obsession with what are the best products around and why. I know there are a lot of you that feel the same way as I do, it’s like our inner teenager comes out takes over and all you can concentrate on is the perfect ‘X’ (insert your fave products here).

My lovely friend Jane, the one with the incredibly refined eye and the most exquisite taste around gets just as giddy as I do. We recently had a beauty obsessed email chain going from here (on the far West Coast) across the Atlantic and when she mentioned Lipstick Queen and wrote, “The BEST lipsticks ever”, I begged her to let me share her thoughts here with you. If you aren’t running out and adding these to your beauty booty, nothing will inspire you to do so!

‘Stoked’, Jane wrote, “Almost feels like a balm, but gives an amazing wash of sheer coral-ly color.” ‘Stoked’ is from the Endless Summer collection.  I have a wee obsession with balms, in all their incarnations-tube, tinted, squeeze, (not so much the pots but I could be persuaded). I digress, this product sounds right up my alley, I want to try the ‘Hang Ten’ which is a sheer nude, I adore a nude lip!

Saint Sunny Rouge, a touch more pigment than ‘Stoked‘, more ‘lipsticky’ but still sheer and easy to wear’.

Chinatown in Chase for natural/easy red and Catalina for the most natural pinky nude. These are so underrated. The texture is perfecto + they are no-brainers to apply”.  For those (like myself) that were not ‘in the know’ on such things this Chinatown chubby is supposedly a gloss-on-the-go. It’s the idea of a gloss, without the goop, brilliant!

I am sufficiently sold and planning on making a little trip to Barney’s before my California trip next week. I may look (and walk) like a tortoise; imagine the large awkward shell in front and legs that just attach to toes sans ankles and you have a pretty accurate image of me. Me thinketh that a hit of Lipstick Queen on my pucker might be a good diversionary tactic from the odd bod, no? Thank you sweet Jane, your insights are always so very thorough and I know you would not lead us astray!

MODERN CALLIGRAPHER ANGELIQUE INK

Angelique Ink interview besotted blog

You may have spotted Angi of Angelique Ink’s  hand before and haven’t known who was the master behind it. You may have even pinned it a few dozen times (she has a bounty of beautiful styles), she has been quietly under the radar creating beautiful work for her clients from her Southern, California studio. Angi’s hand has an effortless air to it as does her personality, so kind and so very professional.  I am very excited to have had the opportunity to interview her and I do believe you will love reading her interview as much as I have (I love the sneak peek behind the scenes). Many thanks to Miss Angi for her time + generosity (divulging her secrets). And without further ado..
