MODERN CALLIGRAPHY FONT | AHRA BY MAGPIE PAPER WORKS

AHRA FONT BESOTTED BLOG

I have kept it no secret that I am head over heels for the foundry Magpie Paper Works. The genius behind the brand Jess is one of my favorite lettering artists.  I love how she has been so prolific and always spot on with the trends on what a designer may be needing but can’t find. Her Vermandois and Saissant are some of the most realistic of the casual/modern hands and she was one of the first to launch with such radically different calligraphy fonts that I feel she opened the gateway for other artists to follow.  Not content to sit back on her previous successes she has launched a gorgeous new font Ahra that will be perfect for both invites and envelopes. It has some truly beautiful contextual alternates & swashes and from the description it reads that she has made it ‘simple & automatic to add end-of-word swashes’. I know Ahra will be as big a success (or bigger) than the ones she has created previously. If you enjoyed my recommendation of the Jacques & Gilles font, I think this has the same feel, but more femme + sophisticated, a great one to add to your collection!

Some others that I think you might like are the newly released Kailey by Molly Jacques, it feels a lot like her own hand that you may have seen pinned everywhere. A bargain font ($5) is the newly released Paris, it has the feel of Strangelove (a hipster staple) but again it is a little more femme.

PINTREST CURATOR MAIA MCDONALD

CURATOR MAIA MCDONALD

I honestly thought I had already featured Miss Maia McDonald prior as she is one of my favorite pinners and the fave pinner of about 1.8 million more. I went through my archives and unless I am totally losing my marbles (possibility) I have not had her as a curator before, for shame.  Maia even with all her Pinterest popularity still feels like a ‘find’.  She has over 20,000 pins to choose from, so if you decide to visit make sure you give yourself lot’s of time to spend at her boards as you will want to re-pin the majority of them, truly. Maia is also the art director at Rue taking the reins over for Bree of Design Love Fest, which make her interior boards a thrill to peruse through. Maia’s Bedroom Dreams with their beautiful white beds and creamy light just make me want to re-arrange my entire bedroom (again). Another board that has me inspired is her Office Spaces, just simple style that can be easily achieved.  A known foodie her food boards will have your mouth watering. Visit Maia, but I am warning you now that you will may be there a while…

And on another note, I wanted to thank you all for the kind thoughtful comments you left yesterday, it was not easy for me to admit a bit of defeat, but I am very happy to have a wonderfully supportive community that would be willing to take the time to write me such heart warming sentiments, it means a lot to me and is greatly appreciated.

AN UPDATE…

this sucks by tristan b.I have been avoiding writing this for some time now as I always want this spot to be a positive break from all the chaos we seem to collect in our worlds.  One of the most important caveats for writing a blog for me though is to remain authentic and I feel that I have been successful at keeping true to that. I try to paint a very realistic picture of my life, its ups & downs and how I have gotten through it; I do this so others don’t have to take as much time getting to their end goal as it has taken me. I believe in you and I also believe that everyone has the opportunity to be creative even if they don’t think they are, it’s what I hope you take from this blog (oh, and a few great beauty secrets to boot).  You may have noticed that I have gotten a little sporadic around here, it is not my intention to leave my beloved blog high & dry, but I have been very sick for what is going on 4 months. We know what the condition is and we have been treating it but it is kicking my a*!, every day has been a struggle and life has been anything but normal. My normal right now does not include me leaving my sofa, which has made it hard to run my business, but thankfully my husband has been a big help with that. I have small spurts of feeling like I am not going to drop and that’s when I have been able to take pics of the dogs, but I am struggling. Strangely by some devious twist of fate I have had a windfall of opportunity come my way in the last few months, opportunities I could have only dreamed of prior and I have had to pass on almost all of them, which makes me even more heart broken. I am just trying to take this one day at a time and focus as usual on all the great things in my life, I do think staying positive has prevented me from falling into a abyss of self pity.  I just wanted to give you an update, so you know that I am not myself  lately, the posts may not come as frequently, be as creative (or witty) as I would like them to be, but I have high hopes for when I get through this, I do hope you will stick it out with me. Wishing you all a very happy (and healthy) day!

MAYBELLINE THE ROCKET VOLUM’EXPRESS MASCARA REVIEW

rocket mascara

I was in Bed, Bath & Beyond buying a blender and in my new city their B, B & B has a huge cosmetics section, what? They had an even larger display calling my name-Volume, length and on sale mascara? Done and done. I bought both the blender and The Rocket mascara. I had high hopes for this mascara, I have enjoyed the Falsies Flared Mascara by Maybelline so I was sure that The Rocket would trump it. I was wrong. Whenever I buy a new mascara I always wipe off the wand on a tissue prior to use to remove excess product, I tried this and found my wand littered with tissue pieces. You see The Rocket wand has stiff, non-flexible bristles. I wasn’t sure if that was going to be a deal breaker, it could have been the key to mascara perfection but alas it deposited the mascara unevenly and gloppy, if I brushed through the lashes I could get some length, but volume looked like it was created via clumping, not a pretty look. Not one to give up, I was willing to go the extra mile for a mascara if the formula delivered so I tried the Flared brush with the formula but it was equally awkward and clumpy. I allowed the lashes to dry and I combed them out with my mascara comb, it just made my lashes look long and spindly.  It’s safe to say this is not something I will ever be purchasing again and won’t be recommending.

Have you tried this mascara before?  Is there a drug store brand mascara that you currently adore? My friend Rachel is loving the L’Oreal Voluminous Power 24 Hour mascara, she claims you can even work out in it!

PINTEREST CURATOR ALICE GAO

Alice Gao Curator Besotted

I am fanatical when it comes to photographer Alice Gao.  She is such an outrageously talented individual that it seems unfair for one person to be in possession of such skill.  Aren’t convinced?  Check out her rockstar Instagram feed, it will blow.your.mind. Alice’s pinterest boards don’t disappoint either, she has a love for blooms and you will find them throughout all her boards in beautiful unexpected ways like that gorgeous wallpaper on the bottom right, I don’t even like wallpaper and this just sends me. Her love for food is obvious and I could be wrong but it looks like she may be working on opening a culinary inspired shop with her Provisions board. I hope you visit her boards and fall in love with her as much as I have.

P.S. Alice also has a great blog that is a visual pleasure and you can live vicariously through all her stunning images.
