Low Key Photography Tutorials

lowkey poppy via besotted

Our prompt this week is ‘low key’.  You can do this in both color and B+W. Your image will have predominately dark tones with prominent highlights. This creates a very moody and atmospheric image. You just need one light source, it can be a sun spot or a key light (like a small lamp).

It’s not too late to start your Foto Rx 52, shooting consistently will be the fastest way to becoming a better photographer. Follow us on Instagram for more inspo and edit examples. Shoot this week’s prompt and use #fotorx52 so we can find you and cheer you on.

Five for Friday

Another incredibly fast week and we are in March?! What the what? I could use a little slowing down of time, you? No worries, we are feeling extraordinary productive and on a creative upswing. I wonder if it has anything to do with our #fotorx52 photo project? Having a photo prompt and weekly deadline is working since we spend the week thinking about what we are going to shoot and how and of course prepping our prompt ideas for the following week.

I. Have you heard about this company that is basically a Wholefoods without the branding? Everything in the on line shop is $3, their brandless branding is A-OK with me, most items are organic and GMP free, worth a peek!

II. Michelle just finished reading this fictional book based on the correspondence between Georgia O’Keefe and Alfred Steigliz, it’s on my list to read next.

III. Fuji Film just released their newest camera model and the word on the street is the video capabilities is aces. The better news is their pro camera X-T1 is a steal now, and I am trying to figure out any good excuse why I shouldn’t have it (I really, really want it).

IV. I have been on the hunt for a good dry shampoo spray, I recently picked this one up made with clay. So far it’s not leaving my hair white or gray, which seems to be the norm with dry shampoos. The scent is strong, but not unpleasant and dissipates fast, under $10 to boot!

V. If you missed it we did a mega round-up of our favorite Skillshare art classes– drawing, lettering, watercolor! Not to be missed! I mentioned in that post that these classes have helped me immensely with my once sub-par drawing skills.

Collections a Photo Prompt

Rock collection edited with Foto Rx Stockholm actions

Our prompt this week for our Foto Rx 52 project  is ‘collections’. Michelle and I are both on the minimalist side so we don’t have grand collections, but even something as simple as these beautiful pebbles in the same tones can help create a beautiful image. Photograph something that has sentimental value or go for a nature walk and revel in all the many splendors available. This could easily turn into an ongoing photo project for you!

P.S. Have you heard of Vero? Supposedly it’s like Instagram without the algorithm and a lot of people are jumping the Instagram ship. We aren’t crazy about the aesthetic, but we do like the concept a lot, we would love to hear from anyone that is using it!

Five for Friday…

Trader Joe's rose hand lotion via besotted blog

Wow! Did this week fly by or was it just me? I can’t believe that it’s already Friday and I am here to share some of my five favorites this week. Michelle was busy with a huge (good) surprise email this morning, so this is just my lips flapping my gums, we’ll get her awesome input next week!

I. Trader Joe’s is getting into the beauty game in a big way with these beautifully packaged rose oil infused products. The fragrance seemed a little heavy for me (but I am very particular with scents). If you are looking for photo props I think they are totally worth having. I also got a rose face oil and I LOVE how only the tiniest drop comes out, I will use it just so I can re-use the bottle in the future.

II. I am loving the concept of this cooking space. In their own words, “Cook Space Brooklyn is a culinary studio designed to foster and build confidence in the kitchen – in an atmosphere where guests feel welcome, inspired, and emboldened to experiment.” I am no where near Brooklyn, but I am hoping this concept catches on cross country, because it’s brilliant. They even have a class where you can cook your meals at their kitchen for the month, just brilliant!

III. I have been having a hard time with my curtains, and this post helped me tremendous amounts. I will be shopping for new rods this weekend, because my curtains although lovely do look like ‘a well put together woman with pants that are too tight’, to quote the indomitable Emily Henderson.

IV. My 4 year old daughter is a prolific artist and has taken over the entire dining room with her creations. I am thinking that I need to figure out another solution for quick + clean display options. I found this one and I think I may just bite the DIY bullet.

V. I am always, always, on the search for new picture books, because I am addicted to them (and of course I read them to my child…sometimes). This one is stunningly beautiful, the colors, the patterns the creativity! The story was a little on the dark side, in a true folklore style, so I’ll wait a while to share with my daughter, but so worth getting a look at if you love picture books too!
