DOWNPOURS + BUTTERFLY BUSHES

I have been watching the weather like it’s a bad reality TV show. I have it set on my Iphone for updates every hour, it gives me a sense of control to know what to expect. Today the little cartoon next to the weather reading was of a partially cloudy sky, I scrolled through the 24 hours and not a cartoon rain cloud in sight. I thought I was getting better at predicting a storm, the sky darkens, gray clouds roll in and voila the sky opens up and it rains. Today it was blue skies, fluffy white clouds and birds chirping away happily.  So how did it get from that to the scene above?  Beats the heck out of me.  This was taken from my front door, the white fog looking stuff is the sheer volume of downpour and the velocity in which it is smacking the asphalt. Are you serious?  I’ve been in the eye of a hurricane before and it didn’t rain like this. No one mentioned this crazy weather prior to us moving here, not that I mind it (for now), but I do like to be a little more prepared. The upside of all this rain is that I don’t have to water my garden. Speaking of garden I am the proud new owner of a butterfly bush. It’s amazing, it smells like lilac and truly does attract butterflies (and bee’s, oh and moths too), but let’s concentrate on the butterflies. It’s been blooming like mad and the butterflies think it’s manna from heaven. I never saw these on the West Coast so maybe it’s just an East coast bloom? If you have room in your garden and love butterflies you need to run out and get one of these, it won’t disappoint, pinky promise.

  1. Oh dear, I’m becoming like a stalker commenter but I just have to say again, what BEAUTIFUL shots. Will you be selling any when you re-open your shoppe? xx

  2. I LOVE the visit Spark:) I don’t think I will be selling these but I am working on two photo projects right now, so hopefully someone will like them and want them for their abode:)

  3. Gorgeous! I love those storms…so moody and beautiful. It’s got to be a change from LA for sure!

And we have butterfly bushes…have them up here, and in fact, I’m thinking of getting some soon, now that my thumb is apparently turning at least brown instead of black….

  4. I am a native SoCal girl from the beach cities and when I went to school in Chicago I vowed to never live in a city with weather again! Then I fell in love with a boy from Toronto and my, oh my, can I relate to this post. My own realization took years to get to and it was his….embrace it all! Buy yourself galoshes boots, an umbrella, and a cool rain jacket and then get wet! Lol! I could imagine the awesome photos you’ll get when you leave the front door!!! All the best to you!!!

  5. If I could sit on the porch and watch that storm, I’d be in heaven (if I had to drive anywhere in it, I’d be in the depths of hell).

We have butterfly bushes here! My mom has always kept them in her yard to make sure the butterflies stop by. Gorgeous.

  6. Mrs. Soup your baby Soup would LOVE it, but be careful of bees. I am happy to have bees but I know that a lot of people are scared/allergic to them! They are pretty hearty as long as you ‘dead head’ them (Google it).

Kamela, I am ordering some galoshes STAT! Toronto is supposed to be fabulous.

Rachel I agree driving in a storm is not for me either and I love that you mom planted these, they are pure magic!

  7. Every year I think I’ll buy a butterfly bush. Maybe next year. Luckily, the butterflies also love honeysuckle . . . and the snapdragons the birds so thoughtfully dropped in!
