THE FLOURISH FORUM

the flourish forum besotted blog

If you only knew how long it took me to create this post. I had to do it in 1 minute increments over two days with one hand (the non-dominant one) and a baby attached to my chest. Phew, not an easy task to complete, but I am here now.  I need to find my mommy/wife/friend/blogging/working rhythm, right now I am just a bit chaotic, deliriously happy but chaotic.

I actually have wanted to write about The Flourish Forum since I was introduced to it, they recently launched  (helmed by calligrapher Erica Mcphee) with a promise to be a calligraphy/lettering resource and the word on the street is they are delivering on their promise. I am so excited that there is a new wave of resources and renewed interests in the lettering arts, ever since I learned that cursive was being discontinued from schools in the U.S. I have been on a mission to keep the art of the written word alive and thriving.  I am happy to say that I do believe from my little perch on the interwebs I have made a bit of an impact. I have seen renewed interest and have joyfully welcomed the sharing of resources and knowledge, we have seen a plethora of classes pop up all over the globe and many new lettering artists open up shop to offer their services.  I know it feels like a trend right now, but my hope is that it is not and that we have turned a curve and will be keeping the written word around for generations to come.  If you are looking for a place to ask questions to an experienced calligrapher and meet like-minded lettering enthusiasts than stop by The Flourish Forum, it’s free and I am sure you will learn a lot there!

If you know of a resource that I haven’t mentioned or there’s a calligrapher/lettering artist you want to suggest me interview (even if it’s you), please feel free to email me at hello [at] besottedbrand [dot] com.

P.S. If you are looking for prior lettering posts, here’s a link to our Calligrapher Interviews (learn so much from the experts!) and more Lettering Love posts.

  1. Hello, first thank you for sharing the Flourish Forum! I just bookmarked it and intend to pin this post to my “resources” board. Second, while reading the first paragraph of your post, I was instantly smiling and could completely relate to what a feat it is to accomplish any work while taking care of a babe. How many times I’ve tried to capture a photo in my little corner of the house where decent natural light while my two youngest are coloring next to me and then suddenly a squabble breaks and I forget what I was doing ;) You are right, it is chaotic bliss!

Ursula, I feel a little lame as it seems like the rest of the world can do all these things and I am flailing about, lol. I can’t even imagine how much more difficult it will be when she is mobile! I will be running around with all my props, camera and my hair awry. You do make it seem very easy Miss Ursula, it’s good to know there is a little chaotic bliss in your life as well;)

  2. What a wonderful surprise! Thank you, Miss Tristan, for such a great write up about the Flourish Forum! I have enjoyed your fabulous features of all things calligraphy and feel honored to now be included. I also remember those days of multitasking with a newborn and so I’m impressed with what you are able to accomplish! Thanks again and I hope to see you around the forum, too. :-)

Erica you are so welcome, thank you for providing this resource! I can’t wait to be able to spend time at the forum (when I get that precious time one again). I also am excited to one day have the opportunity to interview you for the series!

  3. Wow, I just checked it out. It’s a wonderful site and I look forward to checking out Erica’s fantastic content on a regular! :-) Besotted is always bringing the new. Thanks, Tristan B.

Thank you Gayle for your kind words + visit:) I am a fan of your ‘casual hand’ lettering style, it’s really gorgeous!

  4. Things will be a little chaotic in the beginning, but you seem like a peaceful person, so I’m pretty sure you’ll find your way working things out. Just don’t be afraid to adjust and re-adjust in order to meet your baby’s needs and yours. Best of luck! By the way, I stumbled on the Flourish Forum the other day and I was pretty amaze that there’s such a forum. I didn’t stay long cuz I thought it was one of those forums where they want you to join for an x amount a month, so I got out of there right away. But thank you for letting us know it’s free! I’ll be sure to book mark them now. And yes, I think we’ll have the art of cursive for a very long time! :)

Carmen I was a peaceful person, now I am a bit of a bumbler, knocking into walls and I even fell over on our walk the other day, just chaos! I do appreciate the vote of confidence though, I hope I can figure out my rhythm soon. I do hope you go back and visit the forum it really is a wonderful resource!

  5. Aww, I really love your writing style, Ms Tristan! So warm, funny, and relatable. You do beautiful work here! I do think The Flourish Forum’s logo looks beautimously besotted in your signature colors. :)

I can attest that the Flourish Forum is fun, welcoming, and stuffed full of amazing resources. I look forward to meeting new members!

  6. Well I love the name, obviously. ;)

  7. Thanks for the intro to Flourish Forum! You’ll get really good at doing all kinds of things with one hand, btw. You’ll be juggling blogging, baby, dinner, the phone and a conversation with your husband in no time!
